Dr. Sketchy's has been operating on a monthly schedule for the past year featuring models from the world of burlesque, circus performers, fetish and fantasy models, acro-yogaists, vaudeville variety performers, and more.  Now, they have brought their show to First Friday!  Founder and ringmaster, Virginia Scare wants to see how the concept plays for these monthly events.  Judging by my time there, it is a welcome addition to the scene!

Dr. Sketchy's promotes a ..an atmosphere of boozy conviviality where everyone can enjoy a non-judgmental environment to try your hand at drawing.  Going in, I expected a mix of Coney Island Freak Show meets art house gallery.  I was not disappointed!  While I did not try my hand at sketching, plenty others did. Image Less than an hour in and every seat was a taken!  A diverse crowd showed for the event; young, middle-aged, male and female.  Toting sketch pads and pencils, charcoals, and easels the crowd attentively sketched the performers.  Peeking over, I can see a variety of styles and interpretations of the artists poses.  I could not help but wonder if the artists saw the poses in the same way I did and I wondered what would bring such a diverse group together.
My curiosity getting the best of me, I asked.  "The models are here for the artists, there is enjoyment on both sides of the stage" said one sketcher as he put aside his pencils to answer my query.  Truly, these are not your traditional art school models.  Gatita performed for our enjoyment during a pose break.  Seductively dancing to a stylized version of Tainted Love, she removes her veil to show us the Bearded Lady.

This is exactly the kind of live art the downtown scene has been missing, and one of my most memorable excursions to a First Friday event! -David Edwards
